Tallow Face Cream: What It Is and How to Use It on Your Face

Tallow face cream is a moisturizer made from rendered beef fat. Its fatty acids sit close to your skin's own oils. It shines on dry, mature or wind-beaten skin. It is not a fit for oily or acne-prone skin. Our Night Repair pairs tallow with 0.6% bakuchiol for overnight use.

What people ask

Is tallow actually good for your face?

For dry or mature skin, yes, as a moisturizer. Tallow is mostly oleic, palmitic and stearic acid, the same fats your skin makes. It softens skin and holds water in. Scripps Health dermatologists note it can sit too heavy on oily or acne-prone skin. Start with a rice-grain amount at night.

Why don't dermatologists like beef tallow?

Mostly because of missing evidence. Cleveland Clinic points out there are no controlled trials showing tallow beats a standard moisturizer. Formulas also vary from maker to maker. Some worry it clogs pores on acne-prone skin. Those are fair points. Tallow is a moisturizer, not a treatment, and it suits dry skin far better than oily skin.

What is the best tallow cream?

The best tallow cream is the one built for your skin's job. For a daytime whole-face moisturizer, a plain whipped tallow works. For fine lines at night, look for tallow paired with a tested active such as bakuchiol. Check the ingredient count and the net weight. Buy from a maker who says where the fat comes from.

Is tallow better than retinol?

No. They do different jobs. Retinol is a vitamin A active with decades of trials behind it. Tallow is a moisturizer with only traces of vitamin A, not enough to act like retinol. For retinol-style results with less peeling, look at bakuchiol. A 2019 British Journal of Dermatology trial found 0.5% bakuchiol matched retinol on wrinkles with less stinging.

Can beef tallow reverse aging?

No cream reverses aging, and tallow is no exception. A rich tallow cream keeps skin hydrated. That makes fine lines look softer while it is on. Daily sun protection does more for aging skin than any moisturizer. For a plant active with trial data behind it, bakuchiol is the one we add to Night Repair.

What do Koreans use instead of retinol?

Korean skincare leans on bakuchiol, peptides, niacinamide and snail mucin instead of retinol. Bakuchiol is the one with a head-to-head trial against retinol. Rice water and ginseng show up too, mostly for brightness. Night Repair borrows the bakuchiol idea and puts it in a tallow base. You do not need a separate moisturizer over it.

What to expect

  1. Tonight
Skin feels sealed and soft by morning. A rice-grain amount covers the whole face. Too much leaves a film.
  2. Week 1
Dry patches and flaking calm down. Makeup sits better over hydrated skin.
  3. Week 4
Fine lines look softer from steady hydration and the bakuchiol. The bakuchiol trial ran 12 weeks, so keep going.

How to use a tallow face cream

Tallow is thicker than a typical face cream. The amount and the timing matter more than the brand.

  • Wash your face and leave it slightly damp. Tallow spreads farther on damp skin.
  • Take a rice-grain amount for the whole face. A pea is too much.
  • Warm it between two fingertips until it turns to oil.
  • Press it in rather than rubbing. Add a second rice grain around the eyes if you like.
  • Use it at night. If your skin is very dry, a smaller amount in the morning works under makeup.
  • Oily or acne-prone skin: try it on one cheek for three nights before going all in.

How Night Repair compares with other tallow creams that carry an active

Plain tallow balms are not a fair match, so we lined up the tallow creams that add an ingredient for fine lines. One more row: paracress, the herb sold on its own as an $85-an-ounce face oil, is already in Night Repair at 5%. Checked September 30, 2026 on each maker's own site.

A note from the maker

I started rendering tallow in my own kitchen after reading a $20 "high-end" lotion's label. It had 52 ingredients, the first one water. My daughters were already using plain tallow on their skin, so I made them something better. My wife tests every batch of Night Repair. If it does not suit your skin, the 60-day guarantee covers it.
