Family Owned Whipped Tallow Body Butter Business

Why I Started Making Tallow Skincare

Hi, my name is Brian, though around here I don’t mind being called Moose.

I’ve learned most of what I know about skincare from the women in my life, especially my wife and our four daughters, but Moose’s Tallow has truly been a full family project from the beginning.

I started making tallow skincare after a serious health scare forced me to rethink everything I put in my body. Once I eliminated processed foods and focused on real ingredients, another question came up: if what we eat matters that much… what about what we put on our skin?

With a busy home full of people I love, that question mattered a lot. When my daughters told me they were already using tallow for skincare, I decided to learn how to make it myself.

What began as a small project to make better skincare just for my family to bless them eventually turned into something much bigger.

Hiker’s Friend FAQ

Everything you need to know about our natural bug and tick guard made with tallow and essential oils.

🦟 Does it actually help keep bugs away?

Hiker’s Friend is made with a strong blend of essential oils traditionally used to discourage bugs.

  • Commonly used for ticks, mosquitoes, and flies
  • Creates a natural scent barrier on the skin
  • Best for everyday outdoor use

It’s a natural alternative, so reapplication is key during extended exposure.

💪 How strong is it compared to bug spray?

This is a natural, essential oil–based formula — not a synthetic spray.

  • No DEET or chemical repellents
  • Works best with consistent reapplication
  • Ideal for hikes, yard work, and daily use

Think of it as a cleaner, skin-friendly alternative rather than a one-spray solution.

✨ How do I use it?

Apply a thin layer to exposed skin before heading outdoors.

  • Arms, legs, ankles, and neck
  • Reapply every 1–2 hours when outdoors

🦶 Where should I apply it for ticks?

Focus on areas where ticks are most likely to latch on.

  • Ankles and lower legs

💧 Will it feel greasy?

It’s a balm, so it feels slightly rich at first but absorbs quickly.

🌿 What does it smell like?

It has a strong, fresh, outdoorsy scent from essential oils.

  • Citrusy and herbal notes
