Why I Started Making Tallow Skincare

Hi, my name is Brian, though around here I don’t mind being called Moose.

I’ve learned most of what I know about skincare from the women in my life, especially my wife and our four daughters. Moose’s Tallow has truly been a family project from the beginning.

I started making tallow skincare after a serious health scare forced me to rethink everything I put in my body. Once I focused on real ingredients, another question came up: if what we eat matters that much… what about what we put on our body?

With a busy home full of people I love, that question mattered a lot. When my daughters told me they were already using tallow for skincare, I decided to learn how to make it myself.

What started as a small project for my family eventually turned into something much bigger.

Key Ingredients

  • Arnica-Infused Oil Arnica-Infused Oil Arnica-Infused OilOil we infuse ourselves by slowly steeping arnica flowers. Arnica has long been used in topical care, especially after hard work or a long day. It helps soothe and comfort tired, overworked skin. A simple, plant-based way to bring arnica to your routine.
  • Beef Tallow Beef Tallow Beef TallowRendered from high-quality beef suet, sourced locally when we can. It is naturally rich in skin-friendly fats and the vitamins A, D, E, and K. Because it mirrors your skin's own oils, it absorbs clean and holds moisture without feeling greasy. A simple, time-tested base with nothing synthetic.
  • Shea Butter Shea Butter Shea ButterA creamy butter pressed from the nuts of the shea tree, used for centuries to soothe and moisturize. Rich in fatty acids, it melts in to soften rough, dry skin and leaves it supple. Ours is naturally refined.
  • Lanolin Lanolin LanolinA natural wax gathered from sheep's wool, and one of nature's best moisture sealers. It locks water into the skin and helps block the dryness that cracks hands and lips. A traditional ingredient that simply works, used at just the right amount.
  • Calendula-Infused Oil Calendula-Infused Oil Calendula-Infused OilMade by slowly steeping calendula (marigold) flowers in a carrier oil. Calendula is one of the gentlest, most soothing plants in skincare, often chosen for sensitive or easily upset skin. In our balms it helps calm and comfort delicate areas.

HOW TO USE

Simple. Protective. Effective.

1

Scoop

Use a small, pea-sized amount. This balm is concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

2

Warm

Warm between your fingertips, then massage into slightly damp or freshly washed hands.

3

Apply

Focus on knuckles, fingertips, cuticles, and rough or cracked areas. Reapply after washing or before bed.

How do we render tallow?

It starts at a local butcher shop in farm country, where one cow yields about 12 pounds of suet. That suet is the fat around the cow's kidneys, rich in vitamins A, D, E and K. Its fatty acids are ones your skin loves, so we render it slowly, by hand.

  1. Hands stirring a stainless pot of beef tallow slowly rendering over low heat on a stove

    Day 1 & 2

Two renders of tallow over low heat, six hours each

  2. Shallow trays of rendered tallow cooling from golden to creamy white on a wooden table

    Day 3 & 4

Dry render for eight hours, cool & dry render again for another eight hours

  3. Glass jar of tallow and oil infusing with dried calendula and arnica flowers in a sunny window

    Day 5

Infuse tallow and oil with organic herbs over low heat for 12-24 hours

  4. A person whipping fluffy tallow body butter in a ceramic bowl with a whisk

    Day 6

Add in beeswax and essential oils (if applicable), cool, whip and fill by hand

Hand Repair Balm FAQ

Everything you need to know about our tallow-based hand balm for dry, rough, and hardworking hands.

What makes Hand Repair Balm different from hand lotion?

Unlike water-based lotions, Hand Repair Balm is a concentrated balm made with arnica-infused tallow, lanolin, calendula, and beeswax. It provides lasting moisture without needing frequent reapplication.

Will it leave my hands feeling greasy?

No. Arrowroot powder and our carefully balanced formula help create a more matte, comfortable finish that absorbs well without leaving hands overly slick.

Can I use it on cracked knuckles and cuticles?

Yes. Hand Repair Balm is especially useful on dry knuckles, cuticles, fingertips, and other rough areas that need extra attention.

Who is Hand Repair Balm made for?

It's ideal for mechanics, woodworkers, gardeners, knitters, crafters, healthcare workers, tradespeople, and anyone dealing with dry, rough, or cracked hands.

What are the benefits of arnica-infused tallow?

Arnica has traditionally been used to help soothe stressed skin, while tallow provides skin-compatible fats that help nourish and support the skin barrier.

How often should I apply it?

Use as needed throughout the day, especially after washing your hands. For intensive overnight moisture, apply a slightly thicker layer before bed.

Can I use it on cuts or open wounds?

No. This balm is for external use on unbroken skin. Do not apply it to open wounds, deep cuts, or bleeding skin. Stop using it if redness, a rash, or irritation occurs. Ask your doctor if it continues. Keep it out of your eyes.
